There are many different specific goals for a workout: intensity, strength, skill, endurance, etc… One goal that can be applied to every workout we do is virtuosity (see title for definition). This means not only always completing all the reps in a given workout, but also making sure each is to proper range of motion and form standards. Why do we care so much about range of motion and technique? Full range of motion requires sufficient flexibility, strength, and motor control to be obtained. The quest for these three traits is critical for any athlete. Technique makes our bodies more efficient and our workouts safer by preventing injury. We could care less if your Fran time is 1:52 if you don’t lock out your thrusters and your chin never even gets to see what the top of the bar looks like. Effort is always more respectable and commendable than score. This is true even at the highest level of competition. Take the time to figure out how to move your body properly through mobility and practice, then have the heart to do it even when your lungs are on fire and your blood turns to battery acid.
