Where do you go?

Today’s Workout:

For Time and Load

21-15-9

Strict Press
Supine Ring Row

Aside from controlling your nervous system, organs, and muscles in a workout, your brain also maintains your conscious thought. Where does yours go when you are raging? Understanding the psychology of crushing workouts is important for any athlete. There are two main approaches to your mental game: association and dissociation. Association means concentrating on the moment and putting your thought into the feelings you are experiencing and the way you are moving. Dissociation is when you detach from your thoughts to avoid being in the moment. Both techniques are useful, and each has its drawbacks. Focus on technique and the signals your body is sending you will most likely help in a technique oriented workout. Association has the potential, in my opinion, to produce better scores and movement during a workout because you will be more aware and concentrated on completing the task on hand. Sometimes, however, you may find yourself in a situation when you are tired, in pain, and maybe even a little beat up from a workout. In these moments, when you want nothing more than to quit, puke, and pass out on the floor, dissociating from the nastiness can be an effective means of getting through to the other side.

  1. I’m not sure I even have a brain while I workout. I pretty much stop thinking and let my body do the work. Sometimes I even close my eyes and feel the rhythm — especially when we row and do situps.
