Attention to proper nutrition is an important pursuit for and athlete. We demand that our bodies get stronger, faster, more powerful, and able to work longer on a daily basis. The one of the primary ways to ensure progress and aid recovery is through food and drink. Maintaining adequate hydration and eating proper ratios of the macronutrients (protein, fat, and carbohydrates) will make you feel and perform better. The two most utilized diets in the CrossFit community are the Paleo Diet and The Zone. The Paleo Diet is based upon eating foods available to a pre-agrarian caveperson: meat, veggies, fruit, nuts, and seeds. Zone recommends a 40-30-30 carb-protein-fat ratio to promote lean mass and avoid the buildup of fat mass through a more controlled hormonal response to meals. Basically Paleo is a diet of quality and the Zone is one of quantity. The complexity and “one size fits all” approach of the Zone make it a little harder to follow, but Paleo is really simple if you are prepared. Whether you goal is to loose weight, gain weight, or maintain a heathy life nutrition is an important skill to master.
