What is your approach to your workout mentally? Do you focus and concentrate on the task at hand? Do you try to detach from the moment and try to go to your happy place? CrossFit requires us to get comfortable with the uncomfortable, how do you manage?

  3. Mentally, I talk shit to the weight and to myself when lifting heavy. I literally repeat: lightweight b*tch. During hard metcon, I try to turn my brain off. All it tells me to do is stop, if I can’t achieve complete shut off I just keep telling myself 5 more or 1 more round until I am done. The mental toughness I have developed through crossfit has definitely translated into other areas of my life (i.e. all nighters running experiments in the lab) have become less problematic.
Quick question though regarding rest days. I find it easier to do 5 days on 2 days off but feel wasted at the end of the week, but I regularly find it hard to fit workouts into my weekend and therefore miss one if I do 3 days 1 day off 2 days on 1 day off. I usually find myself doing 3 days on 1 day off, 1 day on and 2 days off, with a run somewhere on the weekend. What are you thoughts? Is 5 in a row too much for healthy recovery?

  4. Ryan, rest and recovery is completely up to the individual. If you feel your performance dropping off after a few days on you should rest. You want to get the most out of every workout. You don’t get stronger from training you get stronger from recovering from training. Listen to the signals your body is giving you if you feel good and have energy, rage, if not then rest. Great question!
