Filiberto and Celina in the Elements Course

Filiberto and Celina just finished Elements. Be sure to welcome them to the group classes this week!

Insulin is a hormone released in response to increased blood sugar. Insulin causes target tissues, namely muscle, liver, and fat tissue, to absorb this sugar and store it as glycogen. Our muscles and liver have a finite amount of storage capacity before excess sugars are stored as body fat. Dense carbohydrate sources illicit a huge insulin release in response to the hyperglycemic state brought on by their consumption. Over time through repeated exposure to hyperglycemia the body becomes more and more resistant to its own insulin and requires more of the hormone to produce the effect of sugar absorption. Left unchecked this condition can and will develop into Type 2 Diabetes and also increases the risks of several other diseases including certain cancers and chronic inflammation. The key to controlling insulin levels is eating low glycemic indexed foods such as fruits and vegetables and balancing the intake of carbohydrate with dietary protein. Controlling insulin levels will increase performance both mentally and physically and can be done easily using the Paleo Diet and eliminating a lot of high-glycemic carbohydrate sources from your diet such as sugars and grains.
