You have probably noticed by now that we have been placing a huge emphasis on strength. The reason for this is that strength is a key component of a good athlete. Stronger athletes tend to do better across the board because they are capable of moving more weight in a metcon setting as well. Strength is not simply due to the contractile ability of your muscles, but is heavily neurological, requires flexibility to get into the most efficient positions, and can help to increase confidence going into any workout. Nearly every other athletic skill is dependent upon having strength. Strength is a necessary building block to develop power, coordination, speed, balance, agility and endurance. Being able to do CrossFit workouts as prescribed requires a lot of strength, not simply cardiovascular ability, and this is why it is a major focus of ours.
Check out legendary strength coach Mark Rippetoe's thoughts on the subject:

Yess, I love strength.
I thought this was fantastic: “Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general.”
I hated this one:
“Even rugby, with its reputation as a big man’s sport, has no organized school of thought on how to incorporate strength training.”
Mr Rippetoe has obviously not attended any facilities, camps, or academies for Rugby in New Zealand, South, Africa, England, Ireland or France. He is grossly off the mark here. This quote smacks of an American who may have seen the sport played once or twice. I’d like to see what he has to say to the Super 14 contract players in the Southern Hemisphere.

that first one is one of my all time favorite quotes. the second one may not be true, but i think rip is pointing to the fact that a true strength program is lacking in a lot of athletic programs.
