Taking Consistency To The Next Level: “Virtuosity”
"Virtuosity is defined in gymnastics as 'performing the common uncommonly well.'"- Greg Glassman
This article from the CrossFit Journal describes an amazing concept. Movements in gymnastics are performed against a nearly unattainable standard. The same is true of CrossFit motions. Every time we squat, deadlift, clean, or do a pull-up, no matter how tired we are or how low the pH of our blood is becoming (read "turning into battery acid"), we should strive to make each rep as close to the motion standards as possible. Full range of motion may be harder, but in the long run it will pay off in strength, flexibility, and confidence in all positions.
One of the best metaphors to describe a new athletes approach to virtuosity is learning to play a musical instrument. You start slow and learn to play the scales and cords. You will hit some wrong notes and not immediately be able to rip out Zeppelin solos immediately, but diligence and practice ultimately pay off. Eventually the skills build upon each other and you can play music. The first time you learn a motion it may feel awkward and frustrating, but if you keep practicing eventually you can learn to play some epic CrossFit symphonies.
